Italian-American businessman Rocco Benito Commisso, president of Fiorentina since 2019 and founder of Mediacom, died on Saturday at the age of 76 “after a long period of treatment”.
“With great pain and sadness, the Commisso family, his wife Catherine, his children Giuseppe and Marisa and his sisters Italia and Raffaelina, announce the death of president Rocco B. Commisso. We miss you and will always miss you,” the club said in an official statement.
The president, according to the ‘Fiore’, was undergoing medical treatment: “After a long period of treatment, our beloved president has left us and today we all mourn his passing”.
Commisso, who was born in Calabria, southern Italy, emigrated to the United States at the age of 12 and joined ‘Fiore’ seven years ago in 2019. He was responsible for the more than 100 million euro sports city project, which is at the forefront in Italy, which the club inaugurated in 2023 and which will now bear his name.
“The Rocco B. Commisso Viola Park, home of Fiorentina, will bear his name forever. An indelible mark of affection and the desire to project the future to young players,” said ‘Fiore’.
During his tenure, Fiorentina reached two Conference League finals (2023 and 2024), a semi-final in the same tournament (2025) and one in the Copa Italia (2023). Now the team, after seasons to remember, is in the relegation places.
In addition, Commisso was founder (1995), chairman and chief executive officer of US telecommunications company Mediacom, which earned him a place on the prestigious Forbes 400 list due to his outstanding career in the cable television industry spanning almost 50 years.
His professional career began at Pfizer, but he also worked at Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase) and later at Royal Bank of Canada.
In January 2017, Commisso acquired a majority stake in the New York Cosmos, where he remained as owner until July 2025, when the team was acquired by North Jersey Pro Soccer. The Commisso family still retains a minority stake in the club.
