Carlos Díez, Real Madrid’s rising star who has caught the eye of the Argentina national team

Real Madrid was crowned UEFA Youth League champion for the second time in its history, and one of the standout players of the tournament was Carlos Díez.

At just 18 years old, he already wears the captain’s armband and has a European title to his name, having played a decisive role in the final against Club Brugge. After a 1-1 draw and a penalty shootout, the midfielder showed grit and converted his shot to secure the 4-2 victory that handed the trophy to the Merengue squad and established him as one of the brightest prospects in European soccer.

Díez, under Argentina’s radar

Born in Spain but with Argentine roots, Díez was coached by Álvaro Arbeloa in Real Madrid’s youth system and later established himself as one of the team’s key players, racking up an impressive goal tally of 15 goals in 35 matches this season.

The player, born in Spain in 2007, stood out at the Stade de la Tuilière, where he not only stole the show with his penalty kick but also demonstrated composure and resilience under intense pressure, which did not go unnoticed.

“After all the work we’ve put in this year, we’re reaping the rewards. The truth is, I’m really happy for all my teammates because we’ve earned this. Let’s celebrate and enjoy it,” he said after the victory.

On the field, Díez stands out for his tactical intelligence, his ability to link up with teammates, and his versatility in moving across different areas of the midfield. These qualities have led him to be compared to other talents who have emerged from the Real Madrid youth academy, but he has also drawn attention internationally, where he could have a promising future.

Thanks to his dual nationality, the player could represent both Spain and Argentina. His father is Argentine, which puts him on the radar of both national teams, in a situation similar to that of Alejandro Garnacho.

Meanwhile, the U-20 team-coached by Diego Placente-could try to recruit him in the short term, while it’s not out of the question that Lionel Scaloni might also consider him down the road. Of course, the Spanish side is also closely monitoring his progress, and he has already received call-ups for the Iberian nation’s youth teams.

Meanwhile, with a standout current performance, Carlos is already drawing comparisons to Nico Paz, another talent who emerged from Real Madrid’s youth system and managed to make the leap to play alongside Lionel Messi and company. Other names that reflect Argentina’s influence at the club include the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ángel Di María, Gonzalo Higuaín, and Jorge Valdano. Now, Díez is preparing to continue writing his own story.
