Victor Wembanyama exits playoff game after head impact as concern grows around Spurs

What looked like just another step in the rise of Victor Wembanyama quickly turned into a moment of real concern. In the middle of the playoff game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the French star took a hard fall while driving to the basket, hitting his head specifically his chin directly on the court.

For a few seconds that felt much longer, Wembanyama stayed down. He eventually got up, sat on the floor, and briefly spoke with a teammate. After a timeout called by head coach Mitch Johnson, he walked straight to the locker room. Minutes later, the update came: he would not return after entering concussion protocol.

An absence that could change the series

Before leaving, Wembanyama had five points and four rebounds in just 12 minutes. Modest numbers, but his impact goes far beyond the stat sheet. His presence on both ends has been a major reason why the San Antonio Spurs established themselves as one of the top teams this season.

The concern is real. San Antonio reached the playoffs for the first time since 2019, carrying real momentum after finishing with one of the league’s best records. Losing their centerpiece at this stage even temporarily could shift not only the direction of the series, but also the team’s confidence.

The timing only adds to it. Just one day earlier, Wembanyama was named Defensive Player of the Year in a unanimous vote, reinforcing his dominance with averages of 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.

In a matter of seconds, everything changed. Now comes the uncertainty how the Spurs move forward, and more importantly, when their most important piece will be back.
