Prince Harry apologizes to Canada for wearing Dodgers hat during World Series

Canada maintains strong cultural and historical ties to the United Kingdom despite gaining full independence over four decades ago. The monarchy continues to play a symbolic role, with Queen Elizabeth II having appeared on Canadian $20 bills since 1935.

Following her death in 2023, King Charles III is officially recognized as the King of Canada and is scheduled to replace his mother on the country’s $20 notes starting in 2027.

The nation’s identity is defined by its distinctive traditions, including a passion for hockey, a strong coffee culture, and renowned politeness.

These features coexist alongside its constitutional monarchy, a legacy of historical events dating back to the mid-18th century.

The Seven Years’ War ended in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris, which ceded large portions of French-controlled North American territory to Britain.

This paved the way for British colonization of Canada. While Canada gradually assumed self-governance starting in 1867, the crown retained ultimate authority until full independence was achieved in 1982.

Controversy During the World Series

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, became the focus of public attention during the 2025 World Series matchup between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Residing in Montecito, California, with his wife Meghan Markle since 2020, Harry attended Game 4 in Los Angeles.

He and Meghan were photographed wearing Dodgers hats while seated in the stadium, a choice that drew boos from fans and criticism from Canadians who viewed it as a lack of support for their national team.

In a subsequent interview with Canadian broadcaster CTV, Harry addressed the situation, acknowledging the misstep and offering an explanation. He described the circumstances as constrained by etiquette, noting that the invitation to the game came from the team owner.

“I was doing what I thought was the polite thing to do,” he stated. Harry also referenced practical considerations, citing the need for a hat under bright stadium lights.

The Duke of Sussex clarified that he wore a Blue Jays hat for Games 5, 6, and 7 and confirmed that he would only wear the team’s hat going forward.

While the initial appearance drew criticism, his efforts to adjust his attire in subsequent games demonstrated awareness of the symbolic importance of such gestures in the context of international fandom and public perception.

This incident illustrates the delicate balance public figures must maintain when navigating cross-cultural expectations. Members of the royal family are often scrutinized for their actions abroad, and seemingly minor choices – such as a team hat – can carry broader symbolic implications.

Harry’s presence at the World Series highlighted how tradition, national loyalty, and personal discretion intersect in public events, particularly for high-profile figures with historical ties to former colonies.

While “Hatgate” generated media attention and debate, Harry‘s public apology and corrective actions reflect a recognition of the sensitivities involved.

The episode also underscores the ongoing cultural and symbolic links between Canada and the British monarchy, even as the country asserts its distinct identity and traditions.

Incidents like this highlight the intersection of history, celebrity, and modern international relations in both sports and public life.
