PGA Tour star’s unexpected dating move steals spotlight at Valspar Championship

Alejandro Tosti did not need a low round to become one of the standout stories at the Valspar Championship, as the Argentinegolfer found a way to capture attention long before the leaderboard began to take shape.

In a tournament known for encouraging personality, Tosti leaned fully into the moment. While most players used their caddie bib messages for humor or heartfelt tributes, the 29 year old opted for something far more direct.

As his caddie Joaquin Ali walked the course at Innisbrook Resort, the message on his back read simply: “NEED A WIFE.”

The bold statement immediately sparked curiosity among fans, many of whom were unsure whether the message applied to the player or the man carrying his bag. What followed was a steady stream of questions, photos, and laughter as spectators tried to decode the unusual request.

“The ladies that volunteer here were asking me, ‘Do you have a wife?’ I said, ‘No,’ and it came from there,” Tosti explained in a video shared by the PGA Tour, revealing that the idea originated from a casual conversation during the week.

What began as a joke quickly turned into a viral moment around the course. Fans repeatedly approached Ali, assuming he was the one behind the message, leaving Tosti to clarify the situation.

“A lot of people were asking if it was my caddie that was needing a wife, but, no, it’s actually me,” he said. “A lot of people were taking pictures and making fun of him and asking what was going on and, yeah, it was fun.”

Rather than shy away from the attention, Tosti embraced it. In a sport often defined by routine and focus, his approach added a refreshing dose of spontaneity to the week. He even offered a playful pitch to anyone watching.

“I offer a lot of good stuff. I love cooking. I fly planes. I can play golf and have fun,” he said, turning the moment into an impromptu introduction to potential partners.

Balancing personality with performance

While the off course storyline drew headlines, Tosti’s performance quietly reflected the steady, if unspectacular, nature of his season. He opened with a level par 71, recording the rare feat of 18 consecutive pars, leaving him several shots adrift of early leader Sungjae Im.

It was a round that highlighted both his consistency and the challenge he faces in turning solid play into contention. Still searching for a breakthrough on the PGA Tour, Tosti has shown flashes of ability but remains outside the top tier of the world rankings.

The Valspar Championship, however, has long been a place where players can express themselves beyond their scores. From playful nicknames to personal tributes, the caddie bib tradition has produced memorable moments year after year.

A week where personality takes center stage

Tosti’s message may not have been the most conventional, but it perfectly captured the spirit of the event. In a field filled with lighthearted gestures and inside jokes, his stood out for its simplicity and boldness.

Whether it leads to anything beyond a few laughs remains to be seen. But for now, the Argentine has ensured that his week in Florida will be remembered for more than just his scorecard.

In a sport that can often feel predictable, Tosti reminded fans that sometimes the most memorable moments come from thinking a little differently.
