Patrick Mahomes, Brittany Mahomes miss KC current’s $52 million stadium unveiling

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is spending his offseason focused on recovery and family – even if that meant missing a major milestone for one of Kansas City’s fastest-growing sports franchises.

Mahomes is rehabbing a torn ACL and MCL suffered in Week 15, and according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, the three-time Super Bowl MVP is fully committed to his comeback.

He’s in there cranking away, making progress every day, seven hours a day on the training center.

While balancing rehab, Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, recently celebrated their daughter Sterling’s fifth birthday in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The couple is also preparing for the 2026 NWSL season as co-owners of the Kansas City Current.

However, when the Current officially unveiled their new $52 million Riverside Stadium and Performance Center on February 25, the high-profile owners were noticeably absent.

KC current unveil $52 million expansion without Mahomes

The Kansas City Current broke ground last July on a sweeping expansion project in Riverside, Missouri. The multi-tiered development includes Riverside Stadium, a state-of-the-art Performance Center, and additional pitch expansion – a $52 million investment designed to elevate women’s soccer infrastructure.

The 2,000-seat Riverside Stadium features a FIFA-certified heated grass pitch and modern amenities, while the 35,000-square-foot Performance Center adds elite training resources. Four youth soccer pitches were also constructed next to the facility, which will serve as a 2026 Men’s World Cup base camp.

The team’s official Instagram account celebrated the unveiling, posting: “Raising the global standard in women’s sports KC Current unveils a new performance center dedicated to the development of players & growing the game.”

Primary owners Chris and Angie Long attended the ceremony. Chris Long emphasized the broader vision behind the investment.

“Investing in women’s sports is not symbolic. It is strategic,” Long said. “It strengthens communities, inspires young people, and drives economic growth. Riverside Stadium & Performance Center is about leveling up the game again.”

Although Mahomes and Brittany helped promote the project when it was announced, their absence this week was notable. Still, with Mahomes focused on rehabilitation and the NFL season ahead, priorities appear clear.

Mahomes still pushing for WNBA Expansion in Kansas City

Beyond the NWSL, the ownership group has also positioned Kansas City as a potential WNBA expansion city. A portion of the Riverside land has been reserved for a future WNBA training facility.

“We think that will happen at some point,” Long told ESPN last year.

While recent WNBA expansion announcements included Toronto, Portland, Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia – leaving Kansas City off the list – Mahomes remains optimistic.

You see how Kansas City has embraced all sports that have been in the city, especially women’s sports, I’ve seen it first hand with the Kansas City Current. I know if we were able to get a WNBA team to Kansas City, it would be packed every single night.

Patrick Mahomes

“That’s just the kind of atmosphere that we have in Kansas City. I’m hoping we can get that done and we can continue to push women’s sports forward.”

Even in absence, Mahomes’ influence on Kansas City’s sports future remains firmly in place.
