The cause of death for Monte Coleman has not been publicly revealed after the three-time Super Bowl champion died at the age of 68.

Coleman‘s death was announced by the Washington Commanders and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he later served as head coach after his playing career.

No official statement has confirmed what caused Coleman to die, and reports following the announcement have stated that a cause of death was not disclosed.

That means any claim about a specific illness, accident or medical condition would be speculation unless confirmed by his family, the university or the franchise.

Monte Coleman’s cause of death has not been announced

The news of Coleman‘s passing prompted tributes across the football world, particularly from those connected to the Commanders and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Josh Harris, the controlling owner of the Commanders, remembered Coleman as one of the greatest players in franchise history and a key figure in Washington’s championship era.

Chris Robinson, vice chancellor and director of athletics at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, also paid tribute to his impact beyond the field.

“Coach Coleman represented everything we strive for at UAPB: excellence, integrity, and a relentless commitment to developing our student-athletes,” Robinson said.

“His legacy is not only written in championships and honors, but in the lives he changed every single day.”

A Washington legend and Super Bowl winner

Coleman spent his entire 16 season NFL career with Washington after being selected in the 11th round of the 1979 NFL Draft.

He became one of the most durable and respected linebackers in franchise history, playing a major role on teams that won the Super Bowl after the 1982, 1987 and 1991 seasons.

Across his NFL career, Coleman recorded more than 1,000 tackles, along with 49.5 sacks, 17 interceptions and 13 forced fumbles.

After football, Coleman returned to Arkansas and built another chapter as a coach. He led Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a SWAC championship in 2012 during his 10 season run as head coach.

Funeral and memorial details are expected to be announced later. For now, the confirmed information is that Monte Coleman has died at 68, with no official cause of death released.
