Paige Spiranac points to a ‘dumb rule’ at the Ryder Cup: ‘It needs to be changed’

Paige Spiranac, the viral media golfer, has criticized the “silly” Ryder Cup rule that benefited Europe in their historic victory over the United States and analyzed the controversial behavior of the public during the competition.

I don’t think unruly fan behavior is a new problem. Competition, alcohol, packed stadiums and crowd mentality all contribute to inappropriate behavior

Paige Spiranac

“I don’t think rowdy fan behavior is a new problem. Competition, alcohol, packed stadiums and mob mentality contribute to inappropriate behavior. Especially now that exaggerated antics will go viral on social media… The good news is that usually only a few people are aggressive. The bad news is that it ruins the experience for everyone else. In my opinion, security staff should crack down on this type of behavior quickly and start enforcing harsh penalties,” Paige Spiranac shared with her millions of social media followers.

Hours earlier, the famous influencer-turned-TV commentator admitted that “unfortunately, I’m not surprised by the behaviour of fans at the Ryder Cup, as it has become the norm at most sporting events and, in my opinion, should change in all sports… I was recently at a football match and the man in front of me was drunk as a skunk, shouting obscenities at the players and rival fans in the stands, spilling his drink everywhere, wanting to fight people, and completely ruined the experience for both me and everyone around him. What was interesting was that his young nephew (about 7 years old) was right next to him, listening to everything. At one point, the boy started to imitate him and shout the same thing, while the family laughed. This behaviour is taught.”

Paige Spiranac against Ryder Cup envelope rule: “It’s silly”

Paige Spiranac was very critical of Viktor Hovland‘s withdrawal, who with muscle pain in his neck could not participate in the singles matches.

It’s a shame that Hovland is injured and can’t play, but it should be an automatic point for the other team. Gaining half a point is crazy!

With that withdrawal, thanks to the application of the ‘Envelope Rule’, Europe secured half a point (Hovland’s match against Harris English was declared a draw).

That rule was nonsense 30 years ago. It’s nonsense now. It’s nonsense regardless of which teams it helps. It’s nonsense and should be changed

The decision to award Europe half a point angered the American fans, as it meant the visitors would need just 1.5 points from 13 singles matches on the final day, instead of the two points they had previously demanded.

“It’s a shame Hovland is injured and can’t play, but it should be an automatic point for the other team. Getting half a point is crazy!” Paige Spiranac complained.

The viral golfer said that “that rule was silly 30 years ago. It’s silly now. It’s silly regardless of which teams it helps. It’s silly and should be changed.”

The history of the Envelope Rule in the Ryder Cup

Gerardo Riquelme reported in MARCA that the Envelope Rule is an unwritten agreement that has been part of the Ryder Cup since 1979.

Each captain is tasked with putting the name of a player in a sealed envelope to be opened in case of emergency. If someone from one team was injured during the competition, so as not to harm that side, the other team would open the envelope and discover who was chosen by the captain. An episode that is a bitter pill to swallow because it is to show the player in whom you had less confidence.

It had already been applied on three occasions: in 1991 when Steve Pate was involved in a car accident the previous Tuesday along with other teammates and he was the worst off. He suffered rib contusions, was only able to play Saturday’s fourball session, and was ruled out for Sunday after being paired with Seve Ballesteros, which raised many suspicions. David Gilford was the name on the envelope.

Two years later, Sam Torrance suffered an infection in a toe and had to give up playing singles. Lanny Watkins was the one who suffered on the American side. And in 1979, both Mark James and Gil Morgan were injured and a tie was agreed between them before the last day.
