Novak Djokovic watches Bosnia knock Italy out of World Cup in dramatic shootout

Novak Djokovic made a surprise public appearance Tuesday night, attending Italy’s dramatic World Cup playoff defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina – a result that sealed the Azzurri’s historic elimination from the 2026 tournament.

The former world No. 1 tennis player was spotted in the stands at Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica, where Bosnia triumphed 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes. His presence was confirmed by the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Djokovic, a well-known football enthusiast and supporter of AC Milan, drew applause from both Bosnian and Italian fans as cameras captured him watching the decisive playoff clash.

Italy appeared on course to advance early when Moise Kean opened the scoring in the 15th minute. However, Bosnia responded late in regulation through Haris Tabakovi, whose 79th-minute equalizer forced extra time.

Italy’s World Cup drought reaches historic low

Neither side could find a winner before penalties, where Bosnia converted four attempts while Italy managed just one, clinching qualification and sending the four-time world champions home.

The defeat means Italy national football team will miss a third consecutive World Cup – an unprecedented streak for a former champion nation.

Italy had previously failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments after playoff losses to Sweden and North Macedonia.

Despite defeating Northern Ireland 2-0 in last week’s semifinal, Italy’s resurgence under pressure ultimately fell short in Zenica.

Djokovic’s football passion on display

Djokovic’s attendance underscored his long-standing connection to football across the Balkans and Italy. The Serbian star is widely admired throughout the region and has frequently expressed appreciation for Italian culture and sport.

Following Bosnia’s earlier playoff victory over Wales, Djokovic publicly celebrated the team on social media, posting a message praising captain Edin Dzeko alongside a congratulatory note.

While Djokovic’s tennis schedule has recently slowed following his latest ATP exit, his appearance in Zenica placed one of global sport’s most recognizable figures at the center of a historic night – one that deepened Italy’s ongoing football crisis and sparked celebration across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
