Casper Ruud’s gesture before crushing Luciano Darderi revealed what it takes to reach the Rome Masters final

Tennis is often described as a sport of details. Small adjustments, emotional control, discipline and focus can completely change the outcome of a match. And sometimes, those details appear even before the match begins. That is exactly what happened before Casper Ruud’s semifinal against Luciano Darderi at the Rome Masters.

As both players walked onto the court, Ruud did so calmly, holding the hand of one of the ball kids beside him, following the traditional protocol and acknowledging the young helper sharing that moment with him. At the same time, another ball kid stood beside Luciano Darderi, expecting the same gesture. But Darderi walked right past him.

A small detail that reveals the player’s state of mind

Maybe it was nerves. Maybe pressure. Maybe he was already mentally locked into the match. Or maybe it was simply an innocent mistake. Nobody truly knows whether it came from anxiety, distraction or even arrogance. But whatever the reason, the contrast between both players immediately became impossible to ignore.

Because moments like these often reveal something deeper about an athlete. Ruud looked calm, focused and aware of everything around him. Darderi, meanwhile, appeared rushed, tense and completely consumed by the pressure of the moment.

Sometimes, the players who pay attention to the smallest details are also the ones best prepared for the biggest moments. And once the match began, that difference became even more obvious.

The stats confirmed his attention to detail

Ruud completely dismantled Darderi with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory to advance to the Rome Masters final. The Norwegian controlled almost every important category in the match, winning 58 total points compared to Darderi’s 32 and converting six of his nine break-point opportunities.

Ruud won 74% of points behind his first serve and 67% behind his second serve, while Darderi struggled heavily under pressure, winning only 24% of points on his second serve. Ruud constantly controlled the pace from the baseline and never allowed the Italian to settle emotionally or tactically into the semifinal.

At one point, Ruud even put together a streak of eight consecutive games during the crushing victory. The semifinal lasted only two sets, but Ruud’s composure and control had already become visible before the very first serve.

Now the Norwegian advances to the Rome Masters final, where he will face Jannik Sinner in one of the biggest matches of the clay-court season. The final will take place Sunday in Rome, and fans in the United States will be able to watch it live on Tennis Channel, as well as streaming platforms that carry the network, including Fubo and YouTube TV.

One small gesture before the match quietly reflected who looked mentally prepared for the moment and who never truly seemed comfortable. Even though Darderi’s confidence while greeting the crowd made him appear self-assured, in the end it revealed the opposite. He was not truly ready, and that also became clear when he forgot the protocol with the ball kid.
