New York sports media explodes over Mets GM David Stearns’ approach to Pete Alonso’s free agency

The ongoing contract feud between Pete Alonso and David Stearns of the New York Mets has drawn fresh scrutiny, this time from inside New York’s own sports-radio world.

On a recent show, one outspoken host leveled sharp criticism at Stearns, placing the blame for the drama squarely on the front office’s shoulders.

His cautious approach to Alonso‘s contract situation has drawn criticism from fans and media, who want immediate results.

The dispute traces back to Alonso opting out of his previous deal, entering free agency despite a strong 2025 season that saw him hit a league-leading number of home runs and reaffirm his status as one of the Mets’ marquee bats.

Front office under fire

On Saturday, radio host Joe Benigno openly criticized Stearns, questioning both his experience and fit for New York.

“No, I don’t like Stearns at all. He’s the typical baseball geek. You know, went to the Ivy League. Smarter than everybody. Probably has as much athletic ability as this table here that I’m touching,” Benigno said.

“If this guy does not sign Pete Alonso, I’ll blame the owner, more than I’ll blame him. But this guy is a small market general manager, really doesn’t belong in New York.”

Sports radio personality Brandon Tierney also chimed in, suggesting that Stearns may be letting Alonso and agent Scott Boras steer the offseason.

The key tension is simple: Alonso delivers elite power but comes with defensive concerns, while Stearns wants to maintain roster balance.

Where could Alonso end up?

Alonso remains one of the most sought-after free agents in baseball. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Mets and Boston Red Sox are considered the frontrunners to sign the 30-year-old slugger.

In 2025, Alonso hit .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs over a full 162-game season. Fenway Park could enhance his power numbers, but the Mets would feel the loss if he signs elsewhere.

Teams willing to pair patience with a commitment to high-level production could secure a cornerstone bat for years to come.

As New York sports media continues to dissect every move, Stearns‘ methodical approach remains under scrutiny.

The city may demand urgency, but the GM is sticking to his plan, leaving fans and analysts eagerly waiting for the next development.
