MLB veteran gives key fact that would stop Yankees’ offer for Bo Bichette

Last week, it was almost a given that Bo Bichette would be joining the Yankees before the trade deadline with a $150 million, five-year contract. The deal has not been finalized and there are two reasons to clarify the situation.

The first of these has to do with a key piece of information revealed by C.J. Nitkowski, a former New York Yankees pitcher. In comments made to Toronto Sports Rush, the former pitcher noted that the 2026 offseason will be more attractive to franchises because there will be a greater number of second basemen as free agents.

The only thing teams considering Bo Bichette as a second baseman should keep in mind is that next year the second base market will be quite loaded. There are some really good options. Nico Hoerner will be a free agent. Brandon Lowe will also be a free agent next year. The list is quite long

This information gives full meaning to the Yankees’ reluctance to pursue Bichette. The same would be true of other teams that have wanted to negotiate with him for next season. In this winter’s market, he is one of the most sought-after players in his position, but next year the field will be wider and that plays against him.

Ozzie Albies could potentially become a free agent. There are some very good ones. Gleyber Torres is also out there. For teams that are considering Bo as a second baseman, I don’t think they’re necessarily going to overextend themselves, because if they feel they have another solution, at least in the short term for 2026, they know there’s a really good market for 2027

C.J. Nitkowski in Toronto Sports Rush

Nitkowski’s comments are consistent with the Yankees’ hiring strategy in this market. The New York franchise has remained stoic in opening the checkbook. It takes things slowly, does not panic and waits until the last moment to see if its negotiations manage to convince contract reductions.

They were going for Bichette, but also for Kyle Tucker, who so far does not want to get off the $400 million, that is, 250 million that Bo; however, New York changed its mind in its intention to acquire the Blue Jays player because they would prefer to wait until 2026 to go for one of the second basemen mentioned by Nitkowski.

Thus, the second factor for Bo to remain untraded in 2025, the Bronx Bombers adhere to their policy of avoiding spending before it is thought out. While it is true that Bichette is a “bargain” for the cost, they prefer to wait and invest long-term with a player who guarantees the same as Tucker, but whose value is less than 400 million.

Kyle Tucker is a bad omen for Bo Bichette

The deadline for signings is approaching. December 22 is the deadline. There are only a few days, a few hours left for teams to negotiate with their targets. One of the most sought-after players this winter, perhaps the most sought-after, is Kyle Tucker. Everyone wants him! There are only a few organizations with a payroll of $400 million to pay what he is asking for, but they are not willing to do that either. They agree that it is an exaggerated figure.

As the clock ticks down, Tucker could lower the amount he is asking for and then those franchises that want him on their roster would indeed spring into action with new proposals. He is the player that many are after. This situation practically closes the door for Bo Bichette to get on the radar of the big organizations.

I don’t get the impression that there’s anything close with (Kyle) Tucker. By extension, that could mean Bo also has to wait, because a lot of the teams that are going to go for Tucker are probably also going to go for Bo. So it could develop that way, where we have to be a little bit more patient
