Mike Campbell, a former Major League Baseball pitcher and one of the Seattle Mariners’ top picks, has died at the age of 61.
The Mariners confirmed the news Friday, expressing deep sorrow and offering condolences to his family and loved ones. Campbell passed away at his home in Kirkland, Washington, on Monday; details regarding the cause of death have not yet been released.
A native of Seattle, Campbell‘s journey to the big leagues began on local sandlots and ballfields. He excelled at West Seattle High School before transferring to Newport High School in Bellevue, where his pitching drew widespread attention.
He later attended the University of Hawaii, becoming a standout pitcher for the Rainbow Warriors. His strong performances at the college level earned him recognition as one of the top draft prospects in the country.
Selected seventh overall by the Mariners in the 1985 MLB Draft, Campbell was one of the highestchosen players in franchise history at the time. He made his major league debut in 1987, two years after being drafted, and spent parts of three seasons pitching for his hometown team.
During his time in Seattle, he showed flashes of brilliance both as a starter and reliever, leaving an impression on fans and teammates alike.
Campbell‘s career is also tied to one of the most notable trades in Mariners history. In 1989, he was sent to the Montreal Expos to complete a blockbuster deal that allowed Seattle to acquire future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, a transaction that would help define the franchise’s future success.

Over a professional career that spanned more than a decade, Campbell pitched in 51 major league games for four MLB clubs: the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs.
He finished with a 12-19 winloss record, a 5.86 ERA, and 135 strikeouts in 233 innings pitched, including three complete games. His career reflected the challenges and resilience required to compete at the highest level, including injuries that limited his time on the mound.
After retiring from professional baseball in 1999, Campbell turned his energy toward business. He cofounded Shiskaberry’s, a dessert franchise selling candy-coated fruit on a stick, with former minor league teammate Steve Towey. This venture allowed him to remain connected to his community while channeling his entrepreneurial spirit.
Campbell is remembered not only as a talented pitcher from Seattle who reached the major leagues but also as a figure tied to a pivotal moment in Mariners history.
