Michael King signs with San Diego Padres forcing Yankees to change plans

Michael King was one of the most talked about names during free agency, especially because he was linked to the Yankees. However, despite the rumors, the reality was different and New York never made a formal offer.

The right-hander chose to stay with the Padres, signing a three-year, $75 million contract, a move that redefines the offseason for both organizations.

Yankees’ interest never progressed

Although Michael King emerged as a logical option to reinforce the Yankees rotation, according to reports close to the negotiations, the front office never put a concrete proposal on the table, which allowed the Padres to move more clearly.

King knows the New York organization well as he made his MLB debut with the Yankees and spent five seasons with the team before being sent to San Diego in the trade that brought Juan Soto to the Bronx. Despite that history, medical doubts ultimately weighed heavily in the decision-making process.

Why didn’t Michael King return to the Yankees?

During his two years with the Padres, King posted a solid 3.10 ERA and a remarkable 277 strikeouts to 89 walks. In 2024, his best season as a starter, he posted a 2.95 ERA in 31 appearances, numbers that positioned him as a high-impact pitcher.

However, the 2025 season was marked by significant injuries: first a nerve problem affecting his right shoulder and then a knee injury that kept him out for several months. That history likely cooled his market, especially for teams like the Yankees, who are already facing multiple absences in their rotation.

Michael King’s contract with San Diego

The Padres bet heavily on an arm they know well. The deal includes three years guaranteed for $75 million, with opt-outs after the first two seasons. In effect, the contract can be worth $22 million for one year, $45 million for two or the full amount if King completes the deal.

San Diego decided to secure one of its most reliable starters following the departure of Dylan Cease and the prolonged absence of Yu Darvish, who will miss the entire 2026 season. For the Padres, keeping King was key to stabilizing a rotation that had been left vulnerable.

What does the Padres’ rotation look like after the signing?

With King back, San Diego looks to have a rotation led by:

  • Nick Pivetta
  • Michael King
  • Joe Musgrove
  • Randy Vasquez
  • JP Sears

While there is limited depth in the last positions, the main core is defined. Management could still look for an additional starter or a bat, preferably a first baseman, to complement the roster.
