Manny Machado goes all out against Padres management for lack of ambition to fight for a title

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado has expressed frustration at the team’s poor offseason, which has seen them take a step backwards in their quest for the franchise’s first MLB title.

The Padres lost players such as Ha-Seong Kim and Jurickson Profar, and have not been able to sign players to give more strength to their roster, so the player questioned the ambition and direction of the team, reported essentiallysports.com.

As if that wasn’t enough, their National League West rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, have strengthened their roster with the signings of Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki and the re-signing of Blake Snell.

With the National League West getting tougher, Machado expressed concern that the Padres could fall behind in their quest for a championship.

Are we disappointed that we didn’t make any moves? Yes. As a team, you look up and you’re a little disappointed that we let some of the guys who were part of our core group go elsewhere. It’s things we can’t control.

Machado’s determination remains intact

Machado has been the anchor of the Padres’ offense, especially in 2024 when he posted a .278 batting average, 163 hits and 105 RBIs, earning his second Silver Slugger award.

His leadership has been consistent, but with the Dodgers strengthening their roster and the division becoming more competitive, the Padres’ future depends on more than just a good ballplayer like Machado.

“We have to look at the guys we have here who are disappointed,” Machado explained of the current state of the club. “We’re going to go out and we’re going to fight”.

Despite his standout performances, he cannot carry the team alone, especially when the Padres are still dealing with glaring gaps in the team, particularly in the outfield and bullpen.

The Padres need to make strategic moves to remain competitive. A possible addition of powerful hitters such as J.D. Martinez, who hit 32 home runs and drove in 106 runs in 2024, could help generate the spark that is so badly needed.

In addition, bolstering the starting rotation with someone like Sonny Gray, who posted a 3.05 ERA in 2024, could give the Padres the depth they need in the pitching staff.

However, the Padres’ shopping window is shrinking and without these key additions, they risk being left behind in a division dominated by powerhouses like the Dodgers.
