A few months before the start of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, the conversation around the Mexican National Baseball Team changed drastically, as what seemed to be a competitive roster began to deflate due to the multiple casualties that have considerably reduced the level of the team.
Between personal decisions, MLB team restrictions and medical situations, Mexico arrives at the tournament with more questions than answers.
Mexico’s World Baseball Classic injury list
The first blow came with the departure of infielder Ramon Urias, who decided not to participate in order to concentrate on his adaptation with the St. Louis Cardinals after his recent signing.
The decision was confirmed after discussions with the Major League organization, prioritizing his preparation in Spring Training as he looks to secure a spot on the club’s roster.
His absence forced Mexico to call up young Nacho Alvarez Jr., a move that generated debate among fans who proposed other national alternatives.
The list of absences did not end there. Pitcher Jose Urquidy was ruled out after failing to obtain authorization due to insurance issues following his elbow surgery.
This situation was compounded by the absence of third baseman Isaac Paredes, who was also not given permission by the Houston Astros. His absence represents a considerable offensive void for the Mexican lineup.
The young pitcher Taj Bradley also chose not to attend the tournament to focus on his preparation with the Minnesota Twins for his first full season in the Major Leagues.
The decision reflects a growing trend: many players are prioritising professional stability and physical health in the face of an increasingly demanding schedule.

Currently, the main candidates to start games include Javier Assad, Taijuan Walker and Sammy Natera Jr, with possible adjustments depending on performance prior to the tournament.
