Inter Miami faces Real Salt Lake today, Wednesday, April 22, in an away match for Week 9 of Major League Soccer, but the game has a special twist.
Team captain Lionel Messi is just six goal contributions (goals + assists) away from breaking a historic MLS record.
Messi, one step away from making history in MLS
The Argentine star has made a huge impact since joining Inter Miami in 2023, winning four titles and bringing joy to his fans with every feat on (and off) the field.
However, the upcoming match could be pivotal in soccer history and his own career: With 57 goals and 37 assists in 60 games with the Herons, Leo could become the fastest player to reach 100 goal contributions in league history if he adds another 6.
Currently, the record is held by Sebastian Giovinco, who needed 95 matches to achieve it during his time with Toronto FC. With more than 30 matches to spare, Leo could snatch this record away from him in the match against Real Salt Lake, close the gap, or surpass it in upcoming matches.
Meanwhile, this figure reflects not only the Argentine’s talent but also his impact and contribution to the club. After nearly three full seasons, Messi is involved in nearly one out of every two of his team’s goals, according to official league records, and leads Inter Miami’s offense per game played.
Now, following their recent 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rapids-in which Lionel added two more goals-Guillermo Hoyos’s team will look to maintain its strong momentum in the Eastern Conference, where it currently sits in second place with 15 points. The match, scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET, will be played at America First Field and already looks promising.
