Liam Rosenior era ends in chaos as Chelsea sack boss after winless run and Brighton humiliation

Liam Rosenior’s tenure as Chelsea head coach has come to an abrupt end after the club confirmed his dismissal in the wake of a damaging 3-0 defeat to Brighton. The result extended Chelsea’s losing streak to five consecutive Premier League matches without scoring, a run that ultimately proved decisive for the club’s hierarchy.

Rosenior, who was appointed on January 6 following the sudden exit of Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day, leaves after less than four months in charge and just 23 matches at the helm.

Brought in from Strasbourg as part of Chelsea’s multi-club structure, Rosenior signed an ambitious five-and-a-half-year contract, signalling long-term intent from the board. However, the optimism surrounding his appointment quickly faded as performances deteriorated and results failed to match expectations.

Despite early backing from sporting directors and internal staff, the team’s form spiralled, leaving Chelsea’s season objectives in serious jeopardy.

The club acted swiftly following the defeat at the Amex Stadium, where Brighton’s Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck secured a comprehensive victory that saw Chelsea slip to seventh in the Premier League table. The loss also allowed Brighton to leapfrog them, intensifying pressure on the underperforming squad.

Chelsea turn to interim leadership amid crisis

In response to the downturn, Chelsea confirmed that Calum McFarlane will take interim charge of the first team until the end of the season, supported by existing coaching staff. The immediate priority will be stabilising results, with European qualification still mathematically possible but increasingly uncertain.

Chelsea currently sit seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool, who also hold a game in hand, making the road back into Champions League contention steep.

A club statement acknowledged Rosenior‘s professionalism and commitment, but admitted the decision was driven by results falling below required standards. The statement also emphasised the need for “self-reflection” within the organisation as they begin the search for a more sustainable long-term appointment.

“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future,” read the club’s statement.

“Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.”

Rosenior‘s record at Chelsea finished at 11 wins, two draws and 10 defeats, a return that fell short of expectations given the club’s investment and squad depth. His inability to find attacking consistency proved particularly costly, with Chelsea failing to score in each of their final five league matches under his leadership.

Attention now shifts to the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley, where McFarlane will take charge of a squad still reeling from recent setbacks. The match represents both a chance for redemption and a stark reminder of how quickly Chelsea’s season has unravelled.

Behind the scenes, the club’s hierarchy faces renewed scrutiny as they attempt to restore stability to a position that has seen repeated managerial upheaval in recent seasons.
