Lionel Messi has shown that, even at 38, he is still going strong in soccer. However, this does not mean that other players are not following in his footsteps and may even surpass him in some areas.

And this is exactly what happened with a midfielder from Sporting Cristal, a team from Peru, who managed to beat him at the Latin American level in an important ranking that Leo usually leads.

Messi is surpassed in prestigious ranking

The truth is that the Argentine ’10’ has stood out not only for his goal passes (being the top assist provider in soccer) and his goals, but also for his accurate free kicks.

Despite this, Martín Távara managed to surpass the Argentine captain by scoring five goals in this manner with Sporting Cristal over the last year. Leo, on the other hand, scored only three.

Thus, Távara took first place in this Latin American ranking, followed by Carlos Áñez, Juan Camilo ‘Cucho’ Hernández, and the Argentine Javier Sanguinetti, with four goals, according to @sofascore_latam.

Meanwhile, Messi and Inter Miami became Major League Soccer champions for the first time on December 6, the club’s fourth title since the arrival of number 10. Added to this are the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, and most recently, the MLS Cup Eastern Conference title.

On the same note, but individually, Leo was awarded the Golden Boot and two consecutive MVP awards this year. In addition, he will remain with the club until 2028.

On the other hand, the captain of the Argentine national team is coming off a victory in the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, a title he will defend if he decides to attend the 2026 edition.

Despite Leo’s desire to play in his sixth tournament, he has stated that he is not yet sure whether or not he will be there.
