Liga MX 2025: The champions, the big failures and the records that marked Mexican soccer

The year 2025 left a deep mark on Liga MX, as it was a year full of emotions, dramatic matches and moments that will undoubtedly remain in the memory of Mexican soccer fans.

Both the Clausura and Apertura of Liga MX gave us great memories with the crowning of a new two-time champion: Toluca. In addition to a couple of disappointments with teams that seemed to be contenders, but remained just that.

There were projects within Mexican soccer that managed to consolidate, perhaps not by winning the title but by leaving a good impression. Therefore, here at MARCA MX we will review what happened in Liga MX in 2025.

Toluca’s total dominance in 2025

During 2025, Toluca experienced one of its most exciting years in Liga MX under the technical direction of Antonio Mohamed, being the protagonists of both tournaments by winning the championship twice.

A key player this year for the Diablos Rojos was Alexis Vega, who has regained a great level not only with the Mexican team, but also with the Mexican national team and was called up again thanks to his great form.

Another player who managed to establish himself in Antonio Mohamed’s starting XI was Marcel Ruiz. The growth of the Mexican footballer was evident throughout 2025 and he was a key piece of the Red Devils’ project to win their 12th star and become the second most successful team in Liga MX.

America: from three-time champions to no titles

On the opposite side, it was a year to forget for America after coming off a three-time championship. This streak of good results and joy achieved in recent tournaments vanished in a painful way for the Azulcremas in 2025.

The Clausura 2025 ended with Aguilas’ dominance with the runners-up spot against Toluca. Prior to that, they were eliminated from the Concachampions by Cruz Azul and could not make their power in the region count.

Continuing on the international stage, America lost the chance to go to the Club World Cup by losing in the playoffs. They closed 2025 with another elimination in Liga MX, at home and in the last minute.

Cruz Azul and Tigres: solid projects but without reward

On the one hand, we have Cruz Azul, who finished the semester in a good way by conquering the Concachampions and, together with America, being the biggest winners in the area to lift a new title.

However, that happened even with Vicente Sanchez on the bench. After the arrival of Nicolas Larcamon, a good team was seen, but two moments marked this second half of the year: the 7-0 in the Leagues Cup and the disastrous December where they were eliminated from Liga MX and lost in the Derby of the Americas.

Tigres had many changes during this year, the most relevant was the retirement of Guido Pizarro to become the feline coach, who already knows the institution for years and is one of the most loved by the fans.

The first half of the year saw them eliminated from the Concachampions, precisely against Cruz Azul, and this Apertura 2025 was the first full season for Guido Pizarro, reaching the final.

Although neither Tigres nor Cruz Azul managed to win the Liga MX title, there is no doubt that the projects of both teams are aiming to continue competing and were among the most consistent teams throughout the year.
