Kylian Mbappe can’t win the Champions League like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, but he beat them in another way

When Kylian Mbappé left PSG for Real Madrid, the goal was quite clearly to win the Champions League. After destroying his competition in Ligue 1, Mbappé decided he needed more help in a new venture in order to create new history.

What has transpired since then is almost impossible to believe. Without him, PSG won the Champions League in his first season since departing. In the season right after, PSG is right back in the UCL semifinals while Mbappé was just eliminated in the quarterfinals.. Mbappé has won it all, almost, except for the trophy he desires most now. In order to reach the level of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Mbappé has to do it on the Champions League stage.

It’s hard to pin the blame on Mbappé this time around, though. Los Blancos had their own issues that they needed to iron out and weren’t able to do so in time to beat Bayern Munich. Mbappé made his contribution when the team needed it, scoring a goal against Bayern. Although the elimination hurts more than anything else for Mbappé, at least Mbappé can say he did something neither Ronaldo or Messi could.

Kylian Mbappe’s 10 away goals are a Champions League record

Mbappé’s goal yesterday gave him double digits in away games during this Champions League campaign. Neither Messi or Ronaldo were able to pull off that 10-plus away goals feat during their illustrious European careers. There is one caveat though: the new ChampionsLeak format means more away games then Ronaldo or Messi experienced in the past.

Mbappe also reached 70 career Champions League goals with his latest tally. That’s a number only five other players in the competition’s history can claim. Eventually, everything must break right in the UCL for a player of Mbappe’s caliber.
