Kevin Durant update adds hope for Rockets as they fight to avoid playoff sweep vs Lakers

The Houston Rockets find themselves in a precarious position, trailing 3-0 to the Los Angeles Lakers in their first-round playoff series, but head coach Ime Udoka has offered a cautiously optimistic update on the status of injured star Kevin Durant ahead of a pivotal Game 4.

Durant has only been available for Game 2 of the series so far, missing both Game 1 and Game 3 due to an ankle injury that has significantly disrupted Houston’s offensive rhythm and forced a heavier burden onto its younger core.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Udoka detailed the ongoing recovery process for Durant, emphasizing the intensity of his rehabilitation work.

According to team reports shared by media correspondent Vanessa Richardson, the veteran forward has been undergoing “around-the-clock treatment” for his ankle.

Udoka added that Durant was even active during the previous game night, engaging in controlled movement sessions that included running on an underwater treadmill as part of his recovery program. While the head coach stopped short of confirming a return, he noted that Durant is showing encouraging progress and will continue to be evaluated leading into Game 4.

For Houston, Durant‘s absence has created a major void in scoring stability and late-game shot creation. The Rockets have been forced to lean more heavily on Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, and Jabari Smith Jr., all of whom have taken on expanded responsibilities during the series.

The team’s coaching staff has repeatedly stressed adaptability, but the lack of a consistent go-to scorer has been evident in critical moments against a more experienced Lakers squad.

Rockets struggle to match Lakers’ efficiency without Durant

Game 3 highlighted the gap between the two teams, particularly in offensive execution and ball movement. The Lakers controlled the tempo with efficient shooting, converting 48% of their field goals and 41% from beyond the arc while generating 28 assists as a team.

Houston, by contrast, shot 41% overall and just 28% from three-point range, while managing 21 assists, underscoring their difficulty in creating clean scoring opportunities without Durant‘s presence.

Despite the defeat, several Rockets players delivered strong individual performances. Sengun led the way with a dominant 33-point, 16-rebound, six-assist outing, showcasing his growing role as a franchise centerpiece. Amen Thompson added 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Jabari Smith Jr. contributed 24 points and six rebounds.

Rookie guard Reed Sheppard also impressed with 17 points and seven assists, offering a glimpse of Houston’s developing depth even in a losing effort.

As the series shifts toward a potential elimination Game 4, Udoka and the Rockets remain focused on making tactical adjustments, particularly in perimeter defense and offensive spacing.

While Durant‘s availability remains uncertain, his possible return has injected a sense of urgency and cautious hope into the locker room.
