Steelers are moving forward without Aaron Rodgers in their mind as they fill out QB room

The biggest question mark for the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into the 2026 season remains Aaron Rodgers. The 42-year-old legendary quarterback hasn’t yet decided if he wants to continue playing football or ride off into the sunset following an illustrious career.

Rodgers has nothing left to prove to anyone, but the idea of reuniting with head coach Mike McCarthy for one final season in Pittsburgh is intriguing. McCarthy and the Steelers can’t afford to keep waiting for Rodgers to make a decision, though. Ideally, Rodgers will be back and be the starting quarterback, but Pittsburgh continues to make moves in case he isn’t.

Pittsburgh Steelers select Drew Allar in third round of 2026 NFL Draft

On Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Steelers stunned many fans by selecting Penn State quarterback Drew Allar with the 76th overall pick, in the third round. Ironically, it was the pick they received from the trade that sent George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

Allar was once considered a potential No. 1 overall pick, following two very strong seasons as Penn State’s starter, but 2025 was an utter disaster for him and the Nittany Lions. He’s certainly talented, though, and at 22 years old he’s an ideal project for McCarthy to develop.

Allar fills out a Steelers quarterback room that has second-year player Will Howard and veteran Mason Rudolph. NFL teams typically don’t carry four quarterbacks on an active roster, so there may be one too many signal-callers if Rodgers actually re-signs with the team. Rudolph could potentially be a trade candidate.

It’s also possible the Allar selection points to the Steelers moving forward without Rodgers. Ultimately, it’s up to him whether he wants to play there or not.
