Julian Araujo has started to write his own story in Scotland with Celtic, where he has found the regularity he was looking for and this consistency has led him to improve his level of soccer. In a recent podcast of the club, the Mexican right-back opened his heart and spoke about what it means for him to wear the jersey of the Mexican national team.

This decision caused controversy at the beginning in United States since Araujo had played matches in lower categories and then in 2021 officially represented Mexico.

Julian Araujo: “My dream was always the Mexican national team”

We are less than 120 days away from the start of the biggest World Cup in history, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. The Mexican national team, led by Javier Aguirre, will have the honor of playing the first match of the 2026 World Cup at the Estadio Azteca against South Africa, and Julian Araujo is still looking to earn a place in the World Cup squad.

The list of the Mexican national team is not yet complete, with players in very poor form and injuries to those who were in good form continuing to take their toll. The efforts to find the squad that will represent Mexico at the 2026 World Cup and it is thanks to this situation that Julian Araujo took advantage of a podcast of his club Celtic, to remind Javier Aguirre that it is an honor for him to be part of the Mexican national team

Even if I only played one game, the feeling I had when I put on the jersey with my name on it was something I wanted to share with my family.

In the same podcast, the right-back praised Javier Aguirre’s right-hand man in the Mexican national team and who is expected to be the coach of the Aztec team after the 2026 World Cup with a view to a more formal project for the 2030 World Cup.

I idolized Rafa Marquez, Andres Guardado, Chicharito Hernandez, Giovanni Dos Santos, Jonathan Dos Santos, Memo Ochoa and Raul Jimenez. I dreamed of playing with them and wearing the Mexico jersey. I never had that feeling with the US national team. I never woke up to watch a US game.

Araujo’s position gives him a good chance of being in the final squad for the 2026 World Cup, as the Mexican in the position, Rodrigo Huescas, is injured and is not expected to recover in time for the tournament. If Julian continues to perform well at Celtic, his place with Mexico could be almost confirmed.
