Barcelona found themselves against the ropes in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. The reality is that Newcastle United were superior for much of the match, and when it seemed like a single goal would be enough, the player many consider destined to be the best footballer on the planet stepped up.

Lamine Yamal took the penalty like a seasoned veteran with decades of experience, yet the truth is he’s only 18 years old and continues to prove he could be the future of world football and a cornerstone for FC Barcelona.

A historic record for Barcelona

Around the 86th minute, Harvey Barnes scored for the Magpies, putting Newcastle ahead, but a penalty in the 95th minute and 50 seconds allowed Lamine Yamal to set yet another milestone in his career with the blaugrana club.

This became the latest goal ever scored by Barcelona to avoid defeat in a Champions League match, and the best part is that it happened in a UEFA Champions League knockout stage, where every goal carries even more weight.

After the 1-1 draw in the Round of 16 first leg, the tie will be decided at the Spotify Camp Nou on March 18, a match where Barcelona would have arrived at a disadvantage if Lamine Yamal had not stepped up.

Now the LaLiga giants must respond as hosts if they want to stay alive in the Champions League, the European title that has eluded Barcelona since 2015
