The 2025 season didn’t go according to plan for the New York Yankees. A mix of injuries, inconsistency, and underperforming stars left the franchise short of its championship standards.
But if general manager Brian Cashman‘s recent comments are any indication, the organization is wasting no time setting an ambitious tone for 2026 – one focused on power, depth, and accountability.
Speaking to reporters at the GM Meetings, Cashman outlined a multifaceted strategy aimed at reestablishing the Yankees as a dominant force in the American League.
But he ruled out an entire rebuild, dismissing the necessity for such drastic changes: “There’s no indication [a rebuild] is something that should be considered,” Cashman told The Athletic.
“We have a farm system that is producing. We have quality major leaguers winning MVPs and potentially getting Cy Young Award votes, and we have the best record in the American League, and we have Gerrit Cole coming back, along with other guys.
“I don’t understand how a rebuild could even be considered.”
Rebalancing the roster around Aaron Judge and Juan Soto
At the heart of Cashman‘s plan is a renewed focus on optimizing the lineup around stars Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
The pair combined for over 70 home runs in 2025, but inconsistent production from the rest of the order often left them stranded.
“One thing we always fight is that we rely too much on the home run,” Cashman said. “But the team that out-homers the other team always moves on in the postseason, and that’s a fact. You also need contact. You need it all.”
The Yankees are expected to explore free-agent options that complement their star duo, with several industry sources linking them to contact hitters such as Alex Verdugo and Whit Merrifield.
Internally, players like Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera will be key to adding defensive versatility and speed on the basepaths – two traits Cashman believes were missing in 2025.
On the pitching front, Gerrit Cole remains the undisputed ace, but the Yankees intend to reinforce the rotation with another high-level starter.
With Carlos Rodon struggling through injuries and inconsistency, a veteran signing or trade could be on the horizon. Names like Corbin Burnes and Shane Bieber have already surfaced as potential targets if the team is willing to part with prospects.
A shift in philosophy and a message of urgency
Beyond personnel, Cashman hinted at a cultural reset inside the organization. The Yankees front office wants to restore the edge and intensity that once defined the franchise.
“We’ve had talent, but talent alone doesn’t win championships,” he said. “We need to get back to playing with urgency every night. That’s the message being sent from ownership down.”
That ownership, led by Hal Steinbrenner, has reportedly greenlit another increase in payroll, signaling that financial flexibility won’t be a roadblock this winter.
However, Cashman emphasized that smart spending – not just splashy moves – will define the offseason approach. “We’ll be aggressive,” he noted, “but we’ll also be disciplined. The goal is sustainability, not short-term fixes.”
Yankees investing in the right places
The Yankees are also investing heavily in analytics and player development, aiming to modernize their approach to lineup construction and in-game adjustments.
The addition of new hitting coach James Rowson and revamped data tools in player development mark another step toward bridging traditional scouting with advanced metrics.
As Spring training looms, optimism is cautiously returning to the Bronx. The combination of elite star power, strategic upgrades, and a reset in mentality gives the Yankees a path back to contention – if execution matches ambition.
In a year when the AL East continues to grow tougher with the likes of the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays surging, Cashman‘s vision is clear: the New York Yankees expect to dominate again, not just compete.
