How the Yankees can breathe easy after seeing Gerrit Cole at his best

The New York Yankees are about to start a new MLB season without two of their best pitchers. In fact, it has been a long time since they have been without their ace, Gerrit Cole, although recently they have received news that are totally encouraging both for the organization and for the fans.

As of today, and practically just hours before a new campaign begins, the Yankees are close to recovering Gerrit Cole, but the best part is that he is already showing flashes of his elite pitching form.

Gerrit Cole’s condition excites New York

Cole pitched 2.1 innings, throwing 26 pitches, with three strikeouts, allowing one hit and one earned run. This is the highest number of innings he has pitched since March 2025, right when he underwent Tommy John surgery.

The team’s insider, Greg Joyce, highlighted on social media that Gerrit Cole averaged 96.3 miles per hour with his four-seam fastball, an encouraging sign in his injury recovery. In his first outing back, against the Boston Red Sox, he pitched just one inning with 10 pitches: he allowed two hits, but did not allow any runs and recorded seven strikes.

During the 2024 MLB season, Cole made 17 starts in the regular phase, posting an ERA of 3.41 and a WHIP of 1.13. However, it was in the MLB postseason where he raised his level, leading the New York Yankees all the way to the World Series and finishing with a solid 2.17 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in five playoff appearances.

Despite the fans’ enthusiasm to see him back on the mound again, manager Aaron Boone has been clear: his participation in Spring Training will not accelerate his return. The organization maintains the initial plan and projects that Cole will return at the end of May, respecting the usual 12-18 month recovery timeline after Tommy John surgery.
