How Robert Kraft failed in attempt to keep photos of Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini under wraps

Just when it appeared the spotlight around Mike Vrabel might begin to fade, a new report has pulled the New England Patriots back into the center of a growing off-field story, this time involving owner Robert Kraft.

Nearly two weeks after photos of Vrabel and former reporter Dianna Russini at a Sedona resort were published, fresh claims suggest the Patriots attempted to stop the story before it ever reached the public.

The images, first released by the New York Post, quickly gained traction online, prompting widespread speculation despite both individuals insisting they were traveling separately with friends.

Now, according to a report from InTouch that has since circulated more widely, Kraft may have intervened during the critical window before publication.

The report claims the Post gave Vrabel additional time to respond prior to publishing, a move that allegedly opened the door for outside pressure. According to the outlet, Kraft used that extended window in an attempt to influence the situation.

“The Post gave Vrabel a longer time to respond than what is considered industry norms, and Kraft took advantage of that extended timeframe to put pressure on the reporter and the newspaper,” the report stated.

It added that a “notorious crisis strategist” was involved, though the effort ultimately failed to prevent the story from running.

While the source of the report has been met with some skepticism, the claims gained traction after being shared across major NFL media platforms.

They also echo elements of previous reporting from ESPN‘s Ben Strauss, who noted that both Vrabel and Russini sought advice from crisis communications professionals once they became aware the story was about to surface.

Strauss reported that the Post was willing to consider altering the tone, or even shelving the piece, if convincing evidence could be provided to support the explanation that both were on group trips. No such evidence was publicly produced.

Patriots left managing a growing distraction

For New England, the timing could hardly be more delicate. With the 2026 NFL Draft approaching, the franchise is attempting to refocus on rebuilding after a disappointing season. Instead, it finds itself navigating a story that continues to evolve.

Kraft‘s reported involvement adds another layer to the situation. While it could be interpreted as an effort to protect the organization, it also risks amplifying attention on a story that might otherwise have faded more quickly.

Russini has since stepped away from her role at The Athletic, while the NFL has indicated it will not pursue any action involving Vrabel under its conduct policies.

Why the story continues to gain traction

What has kept this story alive is not just the initial report, but the lack of definitive closure. Without clear evidence to support the explanations offered, speculation has filled the gaps, and each new development has extended its shelf life.

Attempts to manage the narrative, whether through crisis communications or alleged intervention, appear to have had limited impact. Instead, they’ve added to the intrigue surrounding the situation.

As the Patriots prepare for a pivotal draft, the organization is once again reminded how quickly off-field issues can overshadow on-field priorities, especially as the story refuses to go away.
