There are several intriguing storylines taking place around MLB, but none is more stunning than the New York Mets being incapable of winning a baseball game. Following an extra innings loss to the Chicago Cubs, the Mets have now dropped 11 straight games, bringing their record to an NL-worst 7-15.
This all comes despite the ball club sporting the second-highest payroll number in all of MLB. Nothing is going right for New York. One of the team’s top players, Francisco Lindor, has stayed positive and adamant that the team will turn it around. But is it even possible at this point?
The Mets have lost 11 straight games and are the last-placed team in the National League despite stunningly high payroll
Mariana Moreno of SI.com pulled out a microscope and identified three key things that need to go the Mets’ way in order for them to get back on track and break out of this shocking slump.
- Juan Soto‘s return to the starting lineup
- Francisco Lindor waking up his bat
- The bullpen improving, mainly Devin Williams
In reality, those three things aren’t asking for a lot. Soto is one of the highest-paid players in MLB, Lindor is making over $34 million this year and Williams is being paid as the third-best closer in the league. The Mets need all three to play to their caliber in order to succeed.
The team’s issues appear to go deeper than just those three star players. Luis Robert Jr. (.257) and Francisco Alvarez (.268) are the only starters hitting above .234 as of this moment. Williams’ 7.11 ERA is brutal, but so is Luke Weaver‘s, which sits at 6.23. Luis Garcia was at 7.11 just like Williams before he got released a week ago.
Everyone needs to improve if the team wants to start winning games again. It will certainly help if three of their best players spearhead that movement, though.
