Hall of Fame Shock: Jeff Kent elected, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens left in the cold

Jeff Kent is headed to Cooperstown-while his legendary former teammate Barry Bonds once again will have to wait.

The Contemporary Baseball Era Committee elected Kent to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, choosing him on 14 of 16 ballots and narrowly clearing the 12-vote requirement.

The decision capped years of debate over one of the most productive offensive second basemen in MLB history and brought a long-awaited reward after Kent fell short in ten years on the BBWAA ballot.

But his selection came with a major headline: Bonds and Roger Clemens each received fewer than five votes, triggering a new rule that removes them from the next Contemporary Era ballot in 2028.

The earliest the two can return to Hall consideration is December 2031, and another sub-five vote showing would effectively end their Hall of Fame hopes for good.

Kent’s numbers are impressive

Kent, 57, played 17 seasons and built a .290/.356/.500 career slash line with 377 home runs, 1,518 RBI, and 55.4 WAR. He remains the all-time leader in home runs by a second baseman and ranks top-five at the position in several major offensive categories.

A five-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger and 2000 NL MVP, he did his best work in San Francisco, hinting Sunday he’d prefer to wear a Giants cap on his plaque.

His case was often overshadowed by criticisms of his defense and by crowded ballots featuring multiple steroid-era stars. On Sunday, those same stars stood on the outside looking in.

Five other stars fell just short of entering the Hall of Fame

Gary Sheffield and Fernando Valenzuela also failed to reach five votes, while Carlos Delgado drew nine and Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy received six apiece.

Kent will be inducted this July in Cooperstown, alongside whoever emerges from the BBWAA vote in January – a group that includes newcomers Ryan Braun and Cole Hamels, plus holdovers Andruw Jones, Carlos Beltrán, and Alex Rodriguez.

For Kent, it’s the long-overdue honor he spent a decade chasing. For Bonds and Clemens, it’s another reminder that Cooperstown still isn’t ready to open the door.
