Guardians pitchers to face trial in May for alleged betting fraud: Here’s how the Clase-Ortiz case is progressing

The scandal that rocked the Cleveland Guardians and all of MLB already has a date for its next chapter. Pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz will face a federal trial in May, after being accused of manipulating pitches to favor gamblers.

Trial underway for Cleveland pitchers

Judge Kiyo Matsumoto of the Eastern District of New York confirmed that jury selection will begin on May 4, leaving open the possibility of bringing forward the opening of the trial if both parties are ready. The trial is expected to last approximately two weeks, according to Assistant US Attorney Sean Sherman.

The atmosphere in the courtroom was sober. Both Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz attended the hearing, but avoided making statements as they left the court. Their lawyers were also reserved, as both players continue to defend their innocence and have rejected the accusations from the outset. For now, they will have to return to court on January 15, the date of their next appearance.

What are Clase and Ortiz accused of?

The charges are severe and multiple. Both pitchers face indictments for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy to influence sporting results through bribery. According to the federal investigation, the pitchers allegedly accepted thousands of dollars to manipulate the outcome of bets related to the speed and type of pitches during MLB games.

According to prosecutors, Emmanuel Clase began collaborating with two gamblers in the Dominican Republic from 2023, sharing early information about certain pitches. In some cases, he would have executed pitches designed to lose specific bets, such as deliberately throwing balls on the first pitch of an at-bat.

Authorities claim that these actions allowed bettors to win more than $400,000 in fraudulent bets. Later, in 2024, Clase allegedly invited Luis Ortiz to join the scheme. The pitcher allegedly agreed to throw balls at key moments in two games, also in exchange for bribes.

Defense lawyers argue that the payments sent from the Caribbean island were legally motivated and did not correspond to match-fixing.

What’s next for Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz?

Although there are currently no formal plea talks, prosecutors have already sent hundreds of gigabytes of digital evidence to defense attorneys. With the trial set to begin in May, the case promises to become one of the most closely watched legal proceedings in American sports.

It will then be up to a jury to decide the future of two players who until recently were enjoying their best moments in Major League Baseball, and who now face a scandal that could change their careers forever.
