Kevin Keegan, the English football legend and two-time Ballon d’Or winner, is suffering from cancer and will have to undergo surgery.

The former player’s family revealed that during a hospital check-up for “abdominal symptoms”, doctors discovered cancer for which Keegan will have to undergo surgery.

“Kevin is very grateful to the medical teamfor their intervention and for the care he is receiving. During this difficult time, the family asks for privacy and will not be making any further comment on the matter,” it added.

During his career, which began at Scunthorpe United in 1968, Keegan played 230 games for Liverpool, scoring 68 goals and winning three league titles, a European Cup and two UEFA Cups.

After seven years at Anfield, Keegan went on to play for Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle United, before hanging up his boots at Blacktown City.

With Hamburg he won a Bundesliga and reached a European Cup final. The Englishman won the Ballon d’Or twice, in 1978 and 1979. As a coach, he managed Newcastle, winning the Premier League in 1993, Fulham, Manchester City and England for a brief period of time.
