Dodgers told not to go see Donald Trump at White House to celebrate title

Since time immemorial, it has been said that sport and politics do not mix, that they are like water and oil, because they lend themselves to different interpretations of interests. Baseball is no exception. This can be exemplified by the request that a sector is making to the Dodgers not to go to the White House and celebrate their title with Donald Trump. The National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), a progressive left-wing group, published an online petition addressed to the Los Angeles team urging the organization not to accept the presidential invitation to be congratulated for winning the World Series against the Blue Jays.

The team represents our neighborhoods, our families and our shared love for our diverse communities. But right now, our community, our city is under siege, we need you to be with us, on the right side of history.

This situation occurs in the context of two situations that involve sports and politics. On the one hand, the Dodgers were crowned and gave the people of Los Angeles an important joy in critical moments they are experiencing as a population due to the government shutdown. On the other hand, precisely because of the country’s paralysis, the Trump administration is not seen in a good light by much of the community.

Is it good or bad for the Dodgers to visit Donald Trump?

In theory, there is nothing wrong with the MLB champion attending the White House. It is a traditional protocol act that does not affect either party. Different presidents in previous decades have carried it out without distinguishing the city of origin or sport in the teams that are received to celebrate their titles.

However, radical views and thoughts, whether Democrat or Republican sympathizers, find background readings that they consider inappropriate because they send the wrong message. In this case, NDLON states that the Dodgers have the opportunity to decline the invitation as a gesture of solidarity with Angelenos affected by the policies of the president in office.

Los Angeles is a city built by immigrants, working families and dreamers. We celebrate our champions, but we also stand for justice, dignity and love for our community. Dodgers, stay with us. Be with the city that has always been with you.

NDLON

Opponents think differently

Detractors of NDLON’s ideology urge the team to ignore the request. In their view, there is no connection between winning a sports championship and a traditional ceremony that honors the winners.
