David Stearns is asked to forget about Pete Alonso and not re-sign him as a free agent

The future of Pete Alonso with the New York Mets is more uncertain than ever. After seven seasons at Citi Field, the home run idol has become a free agent and it seems that the front office will have to choose between loyalty to the slugger or a deep restructuring of the roster.

I don’t want my time with the Mets to end

Pete Alonso

“We have an amazing group here with a great purpose. It’s been great to play here, but yes, I hope it doesn’t end,” Alonso said, hinting at his desire to stay in New York. However, manager David Stearns and owner Steve Cohen face a dilemma: renew the player for a figure close to $147 million or allocate that budget to bolster the pitching rotation.

Analysts call for new strategy without Alonso

Joel Reuter, an analyst for Bleacher Report, argues that it is time to “turn the page”. In his opinion, the Mets should invest in experienced arms and move Mark Vientos to first base. The logic behind the argument is simple: the rotation needs stability, and youngsters Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat are not yet ready to shoulder that responsibility.

With names like Framber Valdez, Dylan Cease, Zac Gallen, Ranger Suarez and Japan’s Tatsuya Imai available, the team could look to strengthen its pitching rather than commit to a long and expensive contract for a player who relies on offensive power.

Alonso’s production remains valuable, but with limitations

At 30 years old, Alonso remains an elite hitter. Last season he posted a .272 average, 28 home runs, 126 RBIs and an .871 OPS, establishing himself as one of the team’s most productive bats. However, his defensive limitations and baserunning raise doubts about his long-term contribution.

His power-hitting profile does not usually age well, and the management knows that production could decline in the coming seasons. Even so, Alonso has made his ambition clear: “My goal is to play baseball until I’m 40… Steve and David have to deliver.”

Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs appear as possible destinations

If the Mets choose not to renew him, the market offers tempting alternatives. The New York Yankees are looking to replace Paul Goldschmidt, while the Boston Red Sox could sign him in light of Triston Casas’ physical problems. The Chicago Cubs, meanwhile, would see Alonso as an ideal reinforcement to bolster the heart of their lineup.

Winter is shaping up to be a busy one in Major League Baseball, and Pete Alonso’s future will be one of the most important decisions on the market. Between excitement, money and planning, the Mets are at a crossroads: keep the idol or go for a new era.
