Cuti Romero suffers injury two months before the World Cup, deepening Tottenham’s crisis

A major concern has left the soccer world in shock: Cristian Romero took a hard blow to the knee in the second half of the Premier League match between Tottenham and Sunderland and left the field in tears.

With two months to go before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Romero’s tearful exit sends a direct warning signal to Lionel Scaloni and the entire coaching staff of the Argentine national team-where Cuti is an irreplaceable piece in the Albiceleste’s lineup-as well as to the club, which is at risk of relegation.

Romero’s injury is a cause for concern at a critical moment

While injuries never come at a good time, the Argentine defender’s blow is a cause of great concern for both Tottenham and the “Scaloneta.”

The night was already proving difficult for the Spurs, who were losing 1-0, but Cuti’s injury added to the pain.

The play occurred in the 64th minute of the match, when Cristian attempted to clear a ball in the defensive zone, but a shove from opposing forward Brian Brobbey caused him to collide with his own goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, leaving him sprawled on the ground and visibly grimacing in pain after being struck by his teammate’s head near the knee.

After receiving medical attention, he tried to get back up, but his expressions of pain and frustration indicated he would not continue on the field, leaving the pitch with evident pain and frustration while covering his face with his hands.

The coming hours will be crucial for determining the severity of his injury through medical tests, as there is still no official medical report and, above all, the recovery timeline.

The situation is particularly concerning given the proximity of the 2026 World Cup, where Romero is a key player on the team that helped the Albiceleste win the title at Qatar 2022.

Amid this context, Tottenham’s current form also weighs heavily. Following his injury, the loss in the away match against Sunderland exacerbated the London team’s difficult situation. The Spurs remain in 18th place in the standings with 30 points, and with just over a month left in the season-which ends on May 24-they need to earn points to climb out of the relegation zone.

Now, all eyes are on the defender’s diagnosis and recovery.
