Cowboys land Caleb Downs and earn high praise from Nick Saban

The Dallas Cowboys made a statement on the first night of the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting safety Caleb Downs with the No. 11 overall pick.

The move immediately drew strong reactions across the league, but perhaps none stood out more than the endorsement from legendary college coach Nick Saban, who didn’t hold back in his praise, or his personality.

Speaking during ESPN’s draft broadcast, Saban emphasized not only Downs’ ability on the field but also the intangibles that separate him from other prospects.

“This guy is a tremendous, tremendous person and competitor. And I’ll tell you what… there’s only a few guys that I love more than this guy as a player on our football team. And he did a great job and he improved even more in Ohio State. Now, I’m a give the Dallas Cowboys a little tip – his momma, n recruiting, made the best white chili I ever ate. You need to go there!”

The lighthearted comment quickly made waves online, but the underlying message was clear:

Dallas is getting a complete player. Downs arrives in the NFL with a reputation built on consistency, intelligence, and physicality, traits that should translate immediately at the next level.

After beginning his collegiate career with Alabama Crimson Tide, Downs elevated his game further following his move to Ohio State Buckeyes.

During the 2025 season, he recorded 68 total tackles, including 45 solo stops, while also contributing across the stat sheet with a sack, a pass defended, two forced fumbles, and an interception.

That kind of all-around production reflects a player capable of impacting multiple phases of the game.

For a Cowboys defense looking to solidify its back end, Downs fills a critical need. His range in coverage and willingness to step up in run support make him an ideal fit for modern defensive schemes, where versatility is essential.

Downs brings immediate impact potential to Dallas secondary

The addition of Caleb Downs signals a clear intention from the Dallas Cowboys to strengthen their defense heading into a pivotal season.

With offenses across the NFL becoming more dynamic, having a safety who can both cover ground and deliver physical stops is invaluable.

Downs’ football IQ is one of his most praised attributes. Coaches at both Alabama and Ohio State consistently highlighted his ability to read plays before they develop, allowing him to react faster than most defenders.

That instinct, combined with his athleticism, positions him as a potential Day 1 contributor.

His leadership qualities also stand out. Despite being just 21 years old, Downs earned respect in two powerhouse programs, adapting quickly after transferring and maintaining a high level of performance.

That adaptability should serve him well as he transitions into the professional ranks.

For Dallas, the pick represents more than just adding talent, it’s about building a foundation.

With several selections remaining in the draft, including multiple picks on Day 2, the front office has an opportunity to continue shaping a roster capable of competing deep into the postseason.

Saban’s endorsement, while entertaining, reinforces what scouts and analysts have been saying throughout the pre-draft process: Downs is one of the safest and most impactful defensive prospects available.

As the Cowboys move forward, expectations will be high for their first-round selection. If Downs can replicate his collegiate success and quickly adjust to the speed of the NFL, he could become a cornerstone of the defense for years to come.
