NFL Draft Round 1 shifts NFC balance with bold Eagles and smart Cowboys

The first night of the 2026 NFL Draft delivered exactly what fans expected: surprises, bold trades, and a few decisions that left people scratching their heads. From a rare deal between division rivals to unexpected picks that shook the board, Round 1 quickly turned into a defining moment for several franchises looking to reset their future.

Eagles bet big on life after A.J. Brown

The Philadelphia Eagles made the most shocking move of the night, striking a deal with the Dallas Cowboys to move up and select wide receiver Makai Lemon. With A.J. Brown expected to move on, Philadelphia is clearly preparing for a new offensive era built around Jalen Hurts. Lemon joins a group that already includes DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks, giving Hurts weapons but also placing the pressure squarely on him.

Cowboys stay disciplined and focus on defense

For once, Dallas showed restraint and it might pay off. Instead of chasing a flashy replacement after moving on from Micah Parsons, the Cowboys focused on building depth and youth. Landing Caleb Downs gives them an immediate playmaker in the secondary, while adding Malachi Lawrence strengthens their pass rush rotation.

Giants embrace change with hybrid defenders

The New York Giants took a different route, fully committing to a defensive reset. After moving on from key pieces, they selected Arvell Reese, a versatile defender capable of impacting the game in multiple ways. In today’s NFL, flexibility on defense is everything, and Reese fits that mold perfectly. Add in offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa later in the round, and New York quietly addressed both sides of the ball while setting a new identity.

Jets quietly build one of the strongest classes

If there was a team that may have won the night without the spotlight, it was the New York Jets. They walked away with three players who could contribute immediately, led by edge rusher David Bailey. Bailey brings polish and production, while Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. add much-needed offensive firepower.

In the first round, the Eagles are entering a new era, the Cowboys are finally showing patience, the Giants are redefining their identity, and the Jets are quietly building for the future. Thursday night may have shifted the balance in the NFC more than anyone expected though it remains to be seen.
