Cooper Flagg has officially begun his NBA journey with the Dallas Mavericks, but even before his first professional tip-off, the top overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft is soaking in experiences that many players could only dream of.

During Monday’s Mavericks Media Day, Flagg spoke with the press not just about basketball but about a major off-court moment from the weekend, his visit to the Ryder Cup and, more notably, his unforgettable encounter with Michael Jordan.

“I mean, the Ryder Cup was incredible,” Flagg said. “I’ve never seen a golf environment like that. It was so competitive, people were chanting. So, it was cool…”

But as thrilling as the golf atmosphere was, the moment that truly stood out came when he met the six-time NBA champion, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time.

“Meeting Michael Jordan is, I mean, that’s my GOAT. That’s who I’ve always seen as the GOAT in my household,” Flagg said. “I think it was a dream come true… It was just really cool he was able to take the time to let me meet him.”

A photo of the two at the event quickly went viral, a generational image that sparked instant conversation online. Many couldn’t help but comment on the symbolism of the future meeting the past.

Flagg looks ahead while honoring the past

In a league where younger stars often lean toward naming LeBron James as their basketball GOAT, Flagg’s choice of Jordan speaks volumes.

It’s a nod to the competitive spirit and relentless pursuit of excellence that defined Jordan’s era, qualities Flagg himself hopes to bring to the hardwood in Dallas.

While it’s far too early to project how Flagg’s NBA career will unfold, his upside has drawn comparisons to previous generational talents.

That’s why the Mavericks didn’t hesitate to take him No. 1 overall, an investment not just in his skills but in his future leadership and star power.

For now, the 19-year-old is focusing on training camp, which is set to begin in Canada as the Mavericks prepare for their preseason slate. With a versatile game, defensive tenacity, and mature basketball IQ, Flagg is poised to make an impact from day one.

The meeting with Michael Jordan may have been a surreal moment, but Flagg understands the work that lies ahead. And with his sights set high, the GOAT he admires could serve as more than just inspiration, he may be the standard Flagg strives to reach.

As the NBA season approaches, all eyes will be on the rookie phenom. And if his idol’s legacy is any indication, Flagg may just be getting started on a special path of his own.
