Canelo Alvarez enters the chat: The Mexican champion defends his own after Jaime Munguia’s failed drug test

Mexican boxer Jaime Munguia finds himself in the midst of a doping scandal after testing positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites during his May 3 rematch against Bruno Surace. The test, conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), threatens to overturn his unanimous decision victory and could lead to a suspension if his B-sample confirms the result. The controversy comes just months after Munguia joined Canelo Alvarez’s team and began training under Eddy Reynoso.

Alvarez, Munguia’s former opponent and now stablemate, stepped in to defend Reynoso amid speculation about the trainer’s involvement. Speaking to the media on May 30, Alvarez stated, “We are fully behind Munguia. Only he knows what happened.” The 34-year-old champion made it clear that Reynoso only oversees training and does not handle fighters’ supplements or meals. Despite his defense, Alvarez acknowledged the importance of ensuring better oversight, suggesting that Reynoso should manage all aspects of an athlete’s preparation to prevent similar issues.

Munguia has since released a statement maintaining his innocence, claiming that earlier tests during training camp returned negative results. “Receiving this notification of an adverse finding has been a complete surprise to me,” he said. The boxer emphasized that he is willing to undergo further testing to prove he has never knowingly used banned substances, adding that contamination is a possibility. The uncertainty surrounding the case has left fans wondering whether Munguia’s victory will stand or be wiped from the record books.

Comparison is inevitable at this moment

The situation has drawn parallels to Alvarez’s own doping controversy in 2018 when he tested positive for clenbuterol ahead of his rematch with Gennady Golovkin. At the time, Alvarez blamed contaminated meat in Mexico for the adverse result, though the incident briefly tarnished his reputation. With Munguia now under scrutiny, Alvarez’s defense of both his teammate and longtime trainer reflects the loyalty and trust within their camp.

If Munguia’s B-sample also tests positive, the repercussions could be severe. A suspension would derail his momentum in the super middleweight division and raise concerns about the credibility of Reynoso’s gym. Munguia’s legal team and management will likely push for additional testing, hoping to clear his name before any formal punishment is handed down.

As the boxing world waits for further developments, Munguia’s future hangs in the balance. Whether he proves his innocence or faces disciplinary action, his case serves as another reminder of the sport’s ongoing battles with doping and regulation. For now, all eyes are on his next move and the final ruling on his B-sample test.
