Canelo Alvarez delivers first shot at William Scull in Saudi Arabia and shows he is in a different league

Even before stepping into the ring, Canelo Álvarez is making it clear he’s already in control. While most fighters go into fight week focused, silent, and tucked away in training, Canelo is doing things a little differently. He’s walking into the spotlight with the confidence of a rock star, and honestly, it’s hard to look away. In Saudi Arabia, where the boxing world has gathered for one of the most anticipated fights of the year, all eyes are on the Mexican champion.

William Scull, his undefeated Cuban opponent, is playing it low key. He’s not talking much, not showing much, and definitely not competing for attention. That alone is making this fight feel even more like a one-man show at least so far. Canelo has been spotted at exclusive venues, showing off his signature fashion and calm swagger that says, “I’ve done this before.”

Canelo Álvarez steals the spotlight in Saudi Arabia

This isn’t just another title defense. It’s an event. The kind of global boxing showcase that mixes entertainment, legacy, and a bit of pageantry. The fight is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fans in the U.S. can catch the undercard starting at 1:00 p.m. ET (10:00 a.m. PT), with the main event expected around 5:00 p.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. PT. It will stream live via DAZN Pay Per View for $59.99 or $89.99 if you go for the Knockout Weekend Bundle that includes Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando Romero.

Oddsmakers and boxing analysts are overwhelmingly backing Canelo Álvarez ahead of his May 3 showdown against William Scull in Saudi Arabia. They point to Canelo’s elite counterpunching, championship experience, and high ring IQ as major advantages. While Scull remains undefeated, he hasn’t faced anyone near Canelo’s level, and he’ll need a near-flawless performance to pull off the upset. Most expect Canelo to win, either by TKO or a dominant decision.

On paper, the numbers say it all. Canelo Álvarez comes into this fight with a record of 60 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws, including 39 knockouts. He’s a four-division world champion with over 18 years of pro experience. William Scull, while undefeated at 22-0, has yet to face an opponent of Canelo’s caliber and has only 9 knockouts to his name. The experience gap is massive, but Scull’s youth and hunger make him an unpredictable wild card. Still, if the numbers are any indication, Canelo isn’t just the favorite he’s in a different league.
