Caitlin Clark takes iconic No.12 jersey for Team USA as Diana Taurasi reveals her true colors

Jersey numbers in basketball are rarely just digits stitched onto fabric-they represent legacy, identity, and expectation. For Caitlin Clark, stepping into the iconic No. 12 for Team USA was about far more than a uniform choice. It marked the continuation of a lineage built by one of the greatest to ever play the game, Diana Taurasi.

For over two decades, No. 12 was synonymous with Taurasi whenever she suited up for Team USA.

Across six Olympic gold medals and countless international tournaments, the number became a symbol of dominance, leadership, and sustained excellence.

So when Clark wore it during the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, the moment carried undeniable weight.

Rather than viewing the transition with hesitation, Taurasi has openly embraced it. Speaking to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Young, the veteran made it clear she believes the jersey is in the right hands.

“It’s so cool to see Caitlin Clark not only wear the USA jersey, but number 12,” Taurasi said.

“I spent two decades wearing that jersey, and that number, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to take it and put it on and just have an amazing career. And Caitlin will do that.

“She had great qualifiers down in Puerto Rico. It’s just going to be fun to watch her play in the summer in Germany and then the Olympics.

“No one better to wear the 12, and Caitlin‘s going to put some gold medals on that jersey.”

A statement performance in Puerto Rico

If there were any lingering doubts about whether Clark could live up to the expectations tied to No. 12, she answered them emphatically on the court.

After an injury-disrupted 2025 season with the Indiana Fever, Clark entered the qualifiers without having played competitive basketball for nearly eight months.

The concern was understandable about potential rust, whether her timing, and rhythm would be in sync, and if she could perform at her best at the international level.

But in Puerto Rico, Clark showed no signs of hesitation. Across five games, she played a pivotal role in leading Team USA to a flawless 5-0 record.

Her ability to orchestrate the offense while contributing as a scorer stood out on a roster loaded with elite talent.

Averaging 11.6 points and 6.4 assists per game, Clark demonstrated efficiency both from the field and beyond the arc.

Even more impressively, she often did so coming off the bench, adapting seamlessly to a system that required balance over individual dominance.

By the conclusion of the tournament, her impact was undeniable. Clark was named MVP of the qualifiers, cementing her arrival not just as a contributor, but as a central figure in Team USA‘s future.

Taurasi hints at Sue Bird involvement

The conversation surrounding the jersey itself added another layer to the backstory.

When asked whether she played a role in Clark inheriting No. 12, Taurasi offered a candid and characteristically lighthearted response.

“Once I’m out of things, I’m out. Maybe Sue Bird, you know, she’s a little bit more calculated than people think. So maybe that was a Sue job. That wouldn’t surprise me,” she added.

For Taurasi, the number represents two decades of setting the gold standard in international basketball. For Clark, it now represents a big opportunity.

With the qualifiers behind her and major tournaments on the horizon, including competitions in Germany and the Olympics, Clark has already made it clear she isn’t just wearing No. 12, she’s ready to elevate it further.
