Bo Bichette will sign with the Yankees on a five-year, $150 million contract

The MLB market is starting to heat up and one of the names generating the most buzz is Bo Bichette. According to David Schoenfield, an ESPN analyst, the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop is highly likely to become a New York Yankees player in a move that could redefine the Bronx infield for the next few seasons.

Bichette, who turns 28 in March, is one of the best free agents available and, according to Schoenfield, would sign with the Yankees on a five-year, $150 million contract. While the journalist does not rule out a continuation in Toronto or a move to the Mets, he says “all the signs” point to New York.

ESPN’s prediction: Million-dollar contract and New York destination

This scenario is gaining momentum amid trade rumors surrounding Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Yankees’ current All-Star second baseman, who is entering his final year under team control and has yet to begin extension negotiations.

How Bichette would fit in the Yankees’ infield

Bichette’s arrival would give the Yankees immediate flexibility in the infield. Schoenfield argues that he could compete with or complement Anthony Volpe, who had an inconsistent 2025 season both offensively and defensively and would also miss the start of next season following shoulder surgery.

Bichette could also play second base, a position he has already played in recent stretches, with Jose Caballero backing up both positions. This versatility is key for a team looking for defensive stability and greater offensive production in the infield.

The numbers behind Bo Bichette

Before being sidelined for the remainder of the regular season with a knee injury, Bichette had a solid 2023:

  • Batting average: .311
  • Home runs: 18
  • Runs batted in: 94
  • Doubles: 44
  • OPS: .840 in 139 games

In the World Series, he returned in great form, hitting .346 with a home run and six RBIs in 27 at-bats, although he played mostly as a second baseman or designated hitter.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the pieces surrounding the decision

Chisholm Jr. also had an outstanding year: .242 average, 31 home runs, 31 steals, 4.2 bWAR and his first Silver Slugger. However, general manager Brian Cashman acknowledged at the Winter Meetings that the club must keep an “open mind” about players entering their final year of contract.

With Ben Rice projected as the starting first baseman, Ryan McMahon as the favorite at third and the renewal of utility player Amed Rosario, Bichette’s possible arrival appears to be a centerpiece in the reconfiguration of the New York infield.

A move that could define the winter

If it goes through, Bo Bichette’s signing by the Yankees would not only be one of the big moves of the offseason, but also a strong gamble to keep New York at the top of the competitive American League. The board is set and the next move could change everything.
