The Toronto Blue Jays have begun to move their pieces in the free agent market with a clear target in mind: Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. According to The Athletic, the Canadian organization has already established formal contact with the player’s representative, Scott Boras, to explore the feasibility of his incorporation into the team.
Although the team was initially looking for a left-handed hitter to balance its lineup, Bregman’s profile, as a right-handed hitter, is extremely attractive due to his leadership, making him an obvious target.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan has highlighted that Bregman is not only an elite defensive piece, but an exceptional “clubhouse guy”. His ability to bring the group together and his postseason experience are attributes that Toronto values above the statistical trend of left-handed hitting.
The possible signing of Bregman would not only strengthen third base, but would also force a tactical restructuring that other players already seem to be facilitating:
- Bo Bichette: The star shortstop has expressed his willingness to move to second base to make room for new signings.
- Ernie Clement: He is projected as a versatile piece who could alternate between second base and utility roles if Bregman is incorporated.
- Addison Barger: To keep his bat in the lineup, the team is considering moving him permanently to right field.

Bregman comes off a strong season with the Red Sox in 2025, where he was selected to his third All-Star Game. His numbers in that campaign support the investment:

Despite the mutual interest, Toronto is not alone in the bidding. Market giants such as the Red Sox (who are looking to retain him), the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks are also in the running.
