Astros put Jake Meyers on the market: These are the teams vying for the center fielder

After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016, the Houston Astros are actively looking to restructure and have put their center fielder Jake Meyers on the market.

The move aims to address one of the team’s biggest needs: to get a Major League starter with contractual control. This prospect has sparked considerable interest, particularly among National League East teams desperately looking to shore up their defense.

Mets and Phillies go for Meyers

Both the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies, both with below-expectation seasons, have emerged as the frontrunners to acquire Meyers, who is about to turn 30.

On the one hand, the Phillies are looking for cheaper alternatives in center field following the expiration of Harrison Bader’s contract, who was acquired at the trade deadline. Meyers represents a cheaper option, vital to maintaining the ability to pay high salaries to key players. The Phillies have trade pieces available, with Moises Chace being the most mentioned prospect for a possible trade.

The Mets, meanwhile, are also trying to correct defensive mistakes after replacing Bader with a combination of Jose Siri and Tyrone Taylor, which did not work in the 2025 season. Acquiring Meyers would immediately improve their defense, a clear priority for management following recent moves such as the trade of Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien.

Pete Alonso rejects the Mets and moves the MLB market

After several negotiations, Pete Alonso was not convinced by the Mets to return, so he is now thinking about better offers and a change of scenery for his career.

The Mets’ proposal for Alonso was for two years plus an option valued at around $30 million per year, which the player did not like at all. After the rejection, it would be the Boston Red Sox who are in the lead to be able to keep the player,

The latest information indicates that the Red Sox would offer a $140 million, five-year contract to Pete Alonso, which could convince him, but for now, nothing is set in a market that is constantly changing.
