Alex Rodriguez’s anecdote about Patrick Mahomes that could have changed NFL history: ‘I’m so glad he didn’t listen to me!’

Fate often works in mysterious ways, and nowhere is that more evident than in the journey of Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs‘ superstar quarterback was once encouraged to follow a very different career path-by none other than baseball legend Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, a former MLB superstar, once advised a young Mahomes to pursue baseball, believing he had the talent to continue his father’s legacy in Major League Baseball. Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes Sr., had an impressive 11-year career as a pitcher, and with those genetics, it seemed logical for his son to follow suit.

However, Mahomes had a different vision for his future-one that led him away from baseball diamonds and onto NFL fields, where he would eventually become one of the most dominant quarterbacks in history.

As Mahomes now prepares to lead the Kansas City Chiefs in yet another Super Bowl, Rodriguez reflected on this moment, realizing how drastically different history could have been if Mahomes had taken his advice.

A-Rod’s Reflection on Mahomes’ Career Path

Rodriguez recently took to Instagram to post a photo of himself with Mahomes, reminiscing about the advice he once gave him. In his caption, he wrote, “I’m so glad Pat didn’t listen to me!”-a statement filled with both pride and humor as he watched the quarterback on the brink of another historic achievement.

For A-Rod, seeing Mahomes‘ journey unfold has been a full-circle moment. From watching him as a child during batting practice to now witnessing him poised to win his third Super Bowl title, Rodriguez can’t help but admire the quarterback’s success.

Rodriguez also admitted that Mahomes‘ decision to choose football over baseball gives him goosebumps, highlighting just how incredible the quarterback’s career has been. While baseball may have lost a promising player, the NFL gained a generational talent, one who has revolutionized the quarterback position with his arm strength, mobility, and leadership.

What If Patrick Mahomes Had Chosen Baseball?

It’s impossible not to wonder how Mahomes would have fared if he had pursued baseball instead of football. He had the skills, the exposure, and the connections to make it to Major League Baseball. In fact, Mahomes was even drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014, proving that MLB scouts saw his potential.

Given his natural athleticism, Mahomes could have developed into an elite pitcher-one capable of dominating the mound with his powerful arm and sharp instincts. His upbringing around professional baseball, thanks to his father, gave him insight into the mechanics of the game and the dedication required to succeed.

However, fate had other plans. Mahomes ultimately committed to football, playing at Texas Tech University, where he showcased his ability to make impossible throws and extend plays under pressure. That decision proved to be the right one, as he now stands on the verge of NFL immortality, leading his team in what could be the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat in league history.

With five Super Bowl appearances in six seasons, Mahomes is already building a legacy that few quarterbacks in history can match. He has become the gold standard for the modern NFL quarterback, redefining what is possible at the position.

A Future That Almost Looked Very Different

While Mahomes‘ talent would have likely made him a star in baseball, there’s no guarantee he would have reached the same level of global superstardom that he enjoys in football. His ability to lead the Chiefs, make jaw-dropping plays, and consistently deliver under pressure has made him one of the most celebrated athletes of his generation.

Even Rodriguez, who once urged him to stick to baseball, now recognizes that Mahomes made the right choice. While the baseball world missed out, the football world gained a legend in the making.

As Mahomes prepares for yet another Super Bowl, one thing is clear-his destiny was always on the football field, not the baseball diamond. And even Alex Rodriguez wouldn’t have it any other way.
