Alex Bregman’s free agency strategy that could cost the All-Star third baseman dearly

With less than a week to go before Spring Training begins,Alex Bregman is still without a team despite being at the top of the list of available free agents, along with Pete Alonso, his “co-star” in the final chapters of the offseason, which began with the entertaining plot of Juan Soto and continued with a brief intermediate story in which Japanese phenomenon Roki Sasaki came on the scene, who did not take long to make his decision and choose the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bregman has not lacked suitors, from a possible return to the Houston Astros, to a trip to the Big Apple to play with the New York Yankees, then came the names of the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays, but the All-Star third baseman still has not reached an agreement that would put an end to his uncertainty.

Over time, there were also rumors of Bregman’s regret after rejecting an offer from the Astros for 6 years and $156 million, which was actually not far from the 7 years and $189 million he is seeking.

Alex Bregman’s strategy could scare off suitors

At almost 31 years of age, Alex Bregman is looking for a long-term contract that will allow him to have peace of mind in his career, but this strategy, coupled with his rejection of the Astros offer, could cost him dearly with the new suitors who have joined the list and who seem to be good candidates.

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs have also shown interest, but may not be in a position to give him a long-term contract.

The Cubs do not usually give long contracts to players over 30 years old, although they might be willing to offer him a five-year deal, which is less time than Bregman has already rejected from the Astros, which puts him in a dilemma to start being flexible, as he remains an exceptional defensive player, but his hitting power is on the decline.
