Aaron Judge opens up after his disastrous performance on Opening Day: I’m booing myself too

The 2026 MLB season has opened under a microscope for Aaron Judge, who finds himself navigating a rare wave of public criticism following a high-stakes month on the international stage.

As the captain of Team USA during the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Judge led the Americans to the championship game in Miami on March 19, only to fall 3-2 to a resilient Venezuelan squad.

The slugger’s 0-for-4 performance in the finale, paired with a tournament average of .222, reignited long-standing debates regarding his ability to deliver in win-or-go-home moments, a narrative that followed him back to the New York Yankees‘ spring training complex in Tampa this past week.

During a recent matchup against the Baltimore Orioles at George M. Steinbrenner Field, Judge was met with a chorus of boos after striking out, a startling reception for a homegrown icon at his own home base.

While analysts noted that a significant portion of the noise likely originated from visiting Orioles fans, the reaction underscored the immense pressure on the 33-year-old to end the Yankees‘ championship drought.

In a sit-down on the Boardroom podcast with NBA superstar Kevin Durant, Judge addressed the feedback with his trademark stoicism, suggesting that external noise rarely exceeds the standards he sets for himself.

“My expectations are already high,” Judge told Durant. “So you guys are booing me or getting on me? I’m booing myself too.”

Chasing history after a narrow MVP victory

The scrutiny comes despite Judge being in the midst of one of the most dominant individual stretches in baseball history. Last November, Judge secured his second consecutive American League MVP award, and the third of his career, after a historic 2025 campaign where he hit .331 with 53 home runs and 114 RBIs.

The race was one of the closest in recent memory; Judge received 17 first-place votes to edge out Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who finished second with 13 first-place votes after a record-shattering 60-homer season of his own.

The narrow victory has fueled a burgeoning rivalry between the two power hitters, both of whom are favored to contend for the 2026 title.
