The New York Yankees have had an up-and-down season so far. At 10-8, the record looks good, but the team isn’t dominating at the plate like they’ve grown accustomed to.
It’s only a matter of time before Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm Jr. really get going. But the team needs more contributions from role players that manager Aaron Boone has confided in. Austin Wells, Trent Grisham and Jose Caballero are all below the Mendoza line after 18 games played.
Ryan McMahon draws the ire of New York Yankees fans
No one is faring worse than Ryan McMahon, though. Now sporting a -0.4 WAR and hitting .119 with no extra base hits, McMahon is currently one of the worst values in all of baseball on his $16 million salary.
The bright side is that McMahon has at least notched a hit in three of his last five games, but that isn’t saying much. Still, Boone is using those hits as a form of positivity, and he once again defended McMahon this week.
Boone isn’t the one who signed McMahon to that contract, but as the manager of the team, he has every right to give his at-bats to another player. He refuses to do that, and it’s irking fans quite a bit.
Many Yankees fans don’t really understand what Boone is waiting for: McMahon has never been a truly consistent hitter, but it’s gotten substantially worse over the past two seasons. Boone can’t possibly keep giving McMahon playing time if this continues.
