A knee injury puts Victor Wembanyama’s historic NBA glory in jeopardy

Victor Wembanyama has enjoyed a highly successful season; unfortunately, injuries have accompanied him just as closely as his major achievements. Toward the end of 2025, he once again suffered a health setback that will very likely keep him away from the hardwood for an undetermined period, raising renewed concern around his durability during this demanding campaign.

The San Antonio Spurs and their French star were involved in a back-and-forth battle against the New York Knicks this past Wednesday, December 31, 2025, a contest that ultimately ended in a thrilling 134-132 victory for the Texas franchise, further fueling optimism around the team’s competitive direction.

However, despite the happiness that naturally follows such a win, celebrations were muted. Wembanyama once again dealt with an injury, an issue that has unfortunately become a troubling pattern throughout the current season and one that continues to cast a shadow over his otherwise brilliant performances.

Victor Wembanyama’s new injury

With the year coming to a close, winning was vital for the Spurs as they attempted to maintain momentum. Yet during that push, something went wrong for Victor Wembanyama. In the final quarter, he was forced to leave the court and head to the locker room so the medical staff could evaluate him.

Minutes later, he was seen returning to the bench wearing sandals, a clear indication that he would not be able to return to the game against the Knicks, despite the team’s narrow and hard-earned victory that night.

It was later revealed that the French player had suffered a hyperextension of his left knee. Based on the way Wembanyama was walking afterward, without any visible limp, early signs appeared encouraging regarding the potential speed and effectiveness of his recovery process.

During the postgame press conference, the 21-year-old addressed the knee issue directly. He stated that he felt fine and expressed confidence that he would be available for the game scheduled for Friday, January 2, 2026, when the Spurs are set to face the Indiana Pacers.

Victor Wembanyama talks about the possibility of being eligible for NBA awards

Taking advantage of his willingness to answer questions, reporters asked Wembanyama whether he was aware of the NBA’s 65-game rule, which stipulates that players must appear in at least 65 of the 82 regular-season games to be eligible for league awards.

Under that rule, players can miss no more than 17 games during the regular season. The European standout has already been sidelined for 12 contests, a figure that naturally drew attention. Without hesitation, he responded candidly.

I don’t dislike that rule”…”And yes, of course it’s in my mind, even if it’s not the first thing I think about.

Wembanyama told reporter Maxine Aubin of L’Équipe in French.

But I also know the Spurs medical staff will do their job regardless of that. That’s what we expect from them, and they’re very good at staying objective.

Some time later, the team announced that X-rays showed no structural damage to Wembanyama’s knee. Even so, they confirmed he would be held out as a precaution, resulting in what would become his 13th missed game of the NBA season.
