Zinedine Zidane set to take over France job as FFF finalizes post-World Cup plan

France has already chosen its next national team head coach, French Football Federation (FFF) president Philippe Diallo confirmed, signaling that a leadership transition will follow Didier Deschamps’ planned departure after the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking to Le Figaro, Diallo revealed the federation has finalized its succession plan behind the scenes while allowing Deschamps to remain fully focused on the upcoming tournament.

“Yes, I know his name,” Diallo said when asked whether a successor had been selected, adding that discussions with candidates were conducted to ensure a smooth handover at the end of the current cycle.

Although the FFF has not officially announced the appointment, widespread reports indicate former France star and Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is set to take over.

Zidane emerges as expected successor

Zidane, who has been out of coaching since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, has long been viewed as the leading candidate for the role. According to Le Parisien, the 1998 World Cup winner has already reached a verbal agreement with the federation.

Diallo outlined strict criteria for the position, emphasizing the need for a figure capable of handling intense national scrutiny while maintaining broad public support.

It takes a profile that ticks many boxes and which can also be supported by the French people.

Diallo noted that fewer than five candidates were considered, and all were French.

Zidane’s stature as a national icon and his success at club level have made him a natural successor throughout the selection process.

Deschamps era set to conclude after 2026

Deschamps, one of the most successful managers in international football, previously confirmed the 2026 World Cup will mark the end of his tenure.

Since taking charge in 2012, he has guided France to World Cup glory in 2018 and another final appearance in 2022, establishing one of the most consistent eras in the national team’s history.

With the next manager already identified, the federation appears focused on maintaining continuity while preparing for a new chapter following the tournament.

The announcement shifts the conversation surrounding Les Bleus from speculation about succession to anticipation over when the transition will officially begin.
